The Wild Atlantic Way

As I had mentioned a loooong time ago; Imke and I went on an amazing roadtrip all across the west coast of Ireland. Following the Wild Atlantic Way. An amazing route along the coastal roads of the west coast, offering amazing and scenic views, from ragged cliffs to high mountains and rolling hills. Ireland really has everything! I had never imagined it to be as beautiful as it is! I always imagined Ireland as green rolling hills, some cliffs here and there but that was about it. The landscape was so much more varied and with so much more raw mountains than I expected(I don’t know about you, but I didn’t really expect high mountains atall!) Our trip was quite extensive as you can see on the map of our route;

This was roughly our route; we ended up taking a slightly different route from Cork to Blackvalley, but I’ll be sharing a post on that soon!:), stayed at hostel 12 (Dún Chaoin) as well and saw a bit more of the coastal roads than we planned. At one point I will get around to making a detailed map of how we ended up driving!

I fell even more in love with this country during that roadtrip!

I’ll be posting more about the things we saw and experienced during our time on the road. But for now I just want to share Imke’s blog posts of tips for those wishing to drive the Wild Atlantic Way!

 

 

Howth:Irish nature in the capital

Howth is one of my “you must see this” spots when friends or family are over for a couple of days. It’s incredibly easy to get to yet you still get a taste of real Irish Nature on the Cliff walk.

Imke recently wrote a blog for An Óige about our trip to Howth, which we did in the first weekend we were here way back in February. Despite the cold we had a lovely day to be outside.

A more personal blog

As some of you might know, I have worked in two outdoor stores so far and the one thing that has struck me is the amount of plastic that come with each shipment of new stock. Tons and tons of plastic are thrown away and I can’t help but wonder; Why, of ALL the companies, are the Outdoor companies and manufacturers not doing something about this?! So far Patagonia and Vaude are the only ones really standing up for the environment and ethic ways of producing. Sometimes I wish I had more experience with these issues. That I was super smart and could invent a new type of packaging that isn’t plastic and harmful to nature. Or a way that packaging would become completely needless. Why is it that all the stores in the Netherlands are charging customers for plastic bags now, while every day millions of plastic packagings are covering the same goods that we buy and then pay extra for a plastic bag?! It seems so weird and unreasonable. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a good law. Yet I wish the behind-the-scenes part of production would do something to produce less plastic waste too.

I wish the government would step up more. Like how in France throwing away food has become illegal. “FINALLY!”was my first thought when I read that! When I worked in the Efteling(a Dutch Themepark) at the end of each day we would have to throw away the food that we didn’t sell and couldn’t sell the next day. Tons of good food just to waste. I can’t wait for this law to pass in the Netherlands too. People are too careless with their food, we should be far more aware on what we have in our fridge and making sure that we eat what we bought before it expires. And there are so many people that would pay to get their hands on the food companies throw away!

It just makes me a bit sad. That there’s so much that would be so easy to change, yet hardly anyone is bothered to do it unless laws are passed(and those are taking way too long! There’s a need for things to change fast, yet governments are reacting slow.

Tijdelijk betaald werk in het buitenland

This one is for all the Dutchies amongst us who are thinking/or about to leave to work temporary abroad. It is mainly focused on the Dutch system and what things to remember to arrange, thus the reason this post will be in Dutch.

“Er zijn er vast meer die dit hebben gedaan” dacht ik toen ik me voorbereide om met Imke mee te gaan naar het buitenland, en daar betaald werk te doen terwijl zij haar stage deed. Maar naast het feit dat ik weet dat er meer mensen zijn geweest was er toch belachelijk weinig informatie te vinden over tijdelijk werk in het buitenland. De wetgeving en regels in Nederland met betrekking tot werken in het buitenland zijn vooral gericht op de mensen die een vaste baan hebben of vanuit hun Nederlandse werkgever worden uitgezonden naar een ander land. Deze werken vaak niet in je voordeel als je maar voor een aantal maanden ergens anders gaat werken.

Maar informatie over al die mensen die gewoon omdat het kan, even tijdelijk geld gaan verdienen terwijl ze rondreizen, is er vrijwel niet. Met veel omwegen en stukjes en beetjes informatie van anderen heb ik mijn weg door dit doolhof moeten zoeken. En om het voor de mensen na mij wat makkelijker te maken, wilde ik dit ook graag met jullie delen.

De volgende dingen zijn belangrijk om te weten.
Letop!: Deze dingen gelden niet als je als student ingeschreven staat bij een Nederlandse opleiding en voor een aantal maanden naar het buitenland gaat, het leven voor studenten in het buitenland is een stuk makkelijker!!

1.  Met de meeste verzekeringen naast je zorgverzekering zal je niet veel problemen hebben, het is handig om te informeren bij je verzekerings maatschappij wat voor een implicaties jouw tijd in het buitenland heeft en voor welke verblijfsduur je zonder problemen in Nederland verzekerd blijft.
2. Het is ook goed om te onthouden dat als je meer dan 8 maanden in een jaar in het buitenland verblijft je verplicht bent je uit te schrijven van het Nederlandse Bevolkings Register of Gemeentelijk Basis Administratie. Dit kan dan ook gevolgen hebben met betrekking tot je verzekeringen.
3. Heb je een betaalde baan gevonden voor een aantal maanden in een land binnen Europa? Als je niet zwart betaald krijgt zal je aan dat land belasting betalen. Omdat de meeste landen binnen Europa een verdrag met Nederland hebben om te voorkomen dat je in twee landen tegelijkertijd belastingbetaald zullen zij dit door gaan geven aan Nederland. Zo weet Nederland dus dat jij daar hebt gewerkt en eigenlijk geen recht had op een zorgverzekering in Nederland. Dit kunnen ze met terugwerkende kracht in rekening brengen. Krijg je wel zwart betaald, dan heb je het makkelijk en hoef je verder niet zo veel te doen. Mensen die buiten Europa gaan werken krijgen met andere regelingen te maken(zo was mij verteld door CZ dat als je buiten Europa gaat werken voor maximaal 3 maanden je gewoon in Nederland verzekerd blijft, maar als dit binnen Europa is dit niet het geval is) Hoewel sommige punten in deze blog je ook dan kunnen helpen met voorbereidingen!
4. Let ook op; Ookal heb je je reisverzekering nog wel, als je geen recht op de basis zorg verzekering in Nederland dan zal je reisverzekering ook basis zorg in het buitenland niet dekken. Zowieso is het goed om te onthouden dat je reisverzekering dan alleen geldt op het moment dat je weg van je werk plaats bent.

Dus je krijgt wit betaald en je blijft niet langer dan 8 maanden weg? Dit heeft een aantal gevolgen. Wettelijk gezien heeft iedereen die in Nederland staat ingeschreven maar in het buitenland werkt geen recht meer op de nederlandse basis zorgverzekering, je bent dan verplicht om je te verzekeren in het land waar je werkt. Dit is een logische wet voor de mensen die fulltime en voor meerdere jaren in het buiteland werken. Maar voor tijdelijk werk is dit alleen maar onhandig. Of je nog wel recht hebt om in Nederland verzekerd te blijven wordt per geval bepaald. De volgende stappen kun je dan het beste volgen:

1. Ga na in het land waar je werk hoe belasting wordt betaald, je hebt waarschijnlijk een persoonsgebonden nummer nodig(vaak moet je hier je BSN nummer ook doorgeven zodat ze de belasting door kunnen geven aan Nederland zodat je niet te veel belasting betaald, ga in het land van bestemming na hoe je korting op je belasting kan aanvragen). Dit moet je zelf in dat land regelen, en heb je vaak ook voor je werkgever nodig om een contract te kunnen krijgen. Zoek dit van te voren uit want overheden kunnen vaak langzaam te werk gaan.
2. Zodra je van jouw werkgever een contract heb gekregen moet je hiervan een foto of een scan maken.
3. Bij de Sociale Verzekerings Bank(SVB) kan je een onderzoek aanvragen of je WLZ verzekerd blijft, hiervoor heb je een scan/foto van je  contract van je werkgever nodig. SVB gaat dan kijken of je wel of niet verzekerd blijft; Als dit niet het geval is heb je ook geen recht op een basis zorgverzekering in Nederland en zal je iets anders moeten gaan regelen. Blijf je wel verzekerd? Dat scheelt een hoop gedoe en hoef je verder niets te doen.
4. Blijf je niet verzekerd? Dan moet je contact opnemen met je Nederlandse zorg verzekeraar en kijken hoe je je verzekering tijdelijk stop kan zetten tot je weer terug komt in Nederland.
5. Vervolgens moet je zelf uitzoeken hoe het geregeld is met zorg verezekering in het land waar je gaat werken, in sommige landen is het namelijk niet verplicht om een zorgverzekering af te sluiten dus zou je ook er voor kunnen kiezen om daar niet verzekerd te verblijven.
6. Wil je wel graag verzekerd zijn maar niet in het land van bestemming? Dan heb je misschien iets aan  OOM verzekeringen; Een fijne tip die ik van een oud-huisgenootje heb gekregen. OOM verzekeringen is een verzekerings maatschappij die is gespecialiseerd in verzekeringen voor Nederlanders die naar het buitenland gaan. Zo bieden ze ook een tijdelijke buitenlandse verzekering aan, waarvan je het pakket zelf samen kan stellen. Hier kan je ook aangeven dat je niet meer WLZ verzekerd bent in Nederland, dan krijg je toch  de gehele basis dekking. Het fijne van deze verzekering is dat hij doorloopt ook als je bijvoorbeeld een aantal maanden in het ene land werkt en dan een aantal maanden in een ander land(Alleen als je in de US gaat werken geldt dit niet). Dit scheelt ook een hoop gedoe met steeds in elk apart land een verzekering te moeten afsluiten.
7. Nu heb je je verzekeringen en alles geregeld maar zorg dat je je bewijs van werken in het buitenland en je verzekeringen goed bewaart.Als je in Nederland staat ingeschreven ben je verplicht om hier een basis verzekering te hebben, behalve dus als je in het buitenland werkt en in Nederland woont(op papier/staat ingeschreven) maar je moet dit wel kunnen aantonen.  Ik heb een aantal verhalen gehoord waar de Nederlandse overheid boetes in rekening had gebracht omdat iemand wel de zorgverzekering had stop gezet maar geen duidelijk bewijs had dat ze in het buitenland had gewerkt. Dus voorkom zulke drama door al  je correspondenties met je zorgverzekeraar(zowel nederlandse als eventuele buitenalndse) je werk overeenkomst en de uitslag van het SVB onderzoek goed te bewaren.

Als alles dan geregeld is, is het tijd om te genieten van alle nieuwe ervaringen en avonturen die je gaat beleven! Ik hoop dat ik een beetje heb kunnen helpen met het wat overzichtelijker te maken!

 

Mocht je zelf ervaring hebben met tijdelijk betaald werk in het buiteland, en vindt je dat er iets mist in mijn stuk of iets veranderd zou moeten worden laat het me dan weten! Suggesties en tips zijn meer dan welkom!

Disclaimer: Dit is de informatie hoe ik die ik heb gevonden op onderanderen: belastingsdienst en zorginstituut Nederland, houd er rekening mee dat er ook dingen kunnen veranderen. Neem altijd zelf de tijd om meerdere bronnen te checken van de overheid en je eigen verzekering om zeker te zijn van de regeleningen met betrekking tot tijdelijk wonen of werken in het buitenland.  

 

Irish HI hostel organisation; An Óige

As you might have read before; My girlfriend and I are living in Ireland for half a year whilst she is doing her internship here(I’m here just for fun;) )

However, what I hadn’t told you is what her internship is actually about; Blogging and creating content for the Irish youth hostel organisation An Óige about their many different hostels!. Recently one of her supervisors at the company asked if I was interested in creating content for them as well, and joining Imke on her travels to hostels, which I obviously would not turn down! So you can expect short blog descriptions with a url to the original blog that I wrote for the An Óige blog whenever we have travelled to hostels 🙂

Our first trip together was to the Wicklow Mountains. Even though I was not asked to create content back then already, I joined Imke for 2 days on her trip while I was off from work. Because it would feel silly to write exactly the same story she already wrote for An Óige I would much rather just refer to her blog post; which you can find over here.

I’m very excited to be able to write for them as well, and looking forward to our first big trip together! March 12 is when we will leave on our Wild Atlantic Way road trip of 9 days(including spending my birthday on the road!) So stay put for more travel updates after that!!

Animated movie recs; The little prince

To those who know me well it is no secret that I adore animated movies. If you would have it; I would pick an animated movie over “real” movies any time. The artwork and scenes so beautifully crafted, it just sparks a feeling of wonder and magic in me. You are not distracted by the rules and qualms of the real world in an animated movie, it is a different world completely and thus anything is possible.

Ofcourse in the last decades, 3d and cgi have improved immensely, allowing us to view worlds that look real like our own, yet have landscapes and creatures that we lack. I love those type of fantasy movies too of course, but there is something touching about animated movies that they just lack. Maybe it’s the part where you yourself have to use your fantasy to believe in what is happening.

One of the most reoccurring arguments people have when they say they “dislike” animated movies is “But it doesn’t look real so I don’t feel as involved in it as if it would be a ‘real’ movie”. Yet, from my point of view, it is irrelevant to me whether a character looks real, is hand drawn, or digitally animated, or even just written. You just need your own imagination and empathy to feel for those characters and be part of their adventures. Empathy is the biggest human virtue and yet these days most people seem to lack empathy for anyone other than those close to them. Maybe that’s the reason why so many people have problems relating to animated characters.

Either way, I am not here to complain about the lack of interest of grown-ups in animated movies. I am here to announce that from today onward, every two weeks I will post a blog about an animated movie that I liked. Sharing whatever gems I found(Aka: I will keep the Disney movies to a minimum because almost everyone knows about those;) )

This weeks little gem is The Little Prince. I have read the book and I absolutely adored it. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I heard there was going to be a movie about it.

I loved the artwork, how the story telling was differently animated compared to the normal story line. Yet what was even more surprising was the storyline itself! As I have mentioned, I read the book, and when I first heard about the movie I thought it would follow the book. Yet it took a completely different turn, and I think it was a good decision that they did! They took the essence of the book, being youthful regardless of your age and taking time to appreciate the little things, and managed to get this message across in the movie too. I won’t spoil much more but this movie is definitely a must see!

Lá Feabhra; Spring in Ireland

As someone born on a warm and sunny day in the middle of March(and who celebrated almost every birthday with good weather) I always thought of spring starting earlier than the commonly known starting date on the 20th of March. No, for me spring started way earlier. So you can imagine my delight when finding out that here in Ireland the official start of spring is not in March but in February! The first of February is known here as Lá Feabhra; the first day of spring and a day where Saint Brigid is celebrated. In the past they used to sow the first few seeds on this day to ensure a good harvest.

Today was one of the first sunny days where I was off while Imke was at her internship and after having spent so many days off staying inside because the weather was crap, I was more than happy to go out!

We live right next to a park and even though it consists mainly of grass and a handfull of trees, it’s on a hill and gives a nice view of the Dublin Mountains on the other side of Dublin. The last few weeks, flowers have been making their way up out of the grass but today I noticed for the first time that a lot of the trees already have green buds too!

Spring really does come at the beginning of February here! It completely caught me off guard. The last years spring always seemed to come too late. By the end of March I was already yearning, craving even to see green leaves on the trees again, and then it often still took a month before they would even start to bud. It was an obsession really; all I could think of when I would look at the trees would be how much I longed to see them green again. But here, here spring has already arrived before I even started to long for it!It makes me love this country even more. I can’t wait to see Dublin in its full green glory.

The way of the wind

Have you ever looked at grass in the wind? And I mean really looked at it? Because if you have, you would have seen the way the wind blows. How certain air streams twist and bend. The wind is not one entity, it doesn’t all come from the same direction with one single airflow. It’s an multiple being consisting of many separate airflows, bending, twisting and turning. All caused by obstacles, some nearby, some miles away.

I love how the grass, the leaves on the trees or trash floating about, can all make the invisible visible; suddenly it’s very clear how the wind turns and twists, which path each individual air flow takes and where it joins up with others.

I could literally sit on a hill for hours, just gazing at the way the wind blows through the grass. This majestic thing that is so powerful yet only visible through other matter fascinates me.

Hello from Ireland

It’s been long, way too long… But I’m back and here to stay!

I’ve recently moved to Dublin for 6 months together with my girlfriend and thought this would be a good time to start up my blog again, so you can expect more updates soon! 🙂
